Our Story
Jefferson Labs was founded by a group of UVA students who saw an opportunity to improve campus life through technology. Inspired by the spirit of innovation at Mr. Jefferson's University, we set out to build the tools students actually need — and to do it in the open.
Our Mission
We believe that students understand student problems best. Jefferson Labs exists to empower UVA students to build, ship, and maintain high-quality software that serves the Grounds community. Every product we make is free, open-source, and built with care.
How We Work
We operate like a startup inside a university. Small, cross-functional teams own each product end-to-end — from design to deployment. Members gain real-world engineering experience while making a tangible impact on thousands of fellow Hoos.

We design and build full-stack applications that solve real problems on Grounds, from mobile apps to web platforms.
Design
Our designers create intuitive, accessible interfaces that students love to use, following modern UX principles.
Engineering
We use modern technologies and best practices — CI/CD, code review, testing — to ship reliable software.
Community
We host workshops, tech talks, and mentorship programs to grow the next generation of student developers at UVA.
